This could ruin your Halloween.
In some US cities, there are age restrictions for trick-or-treaters, which means children of a certain age may not be eligible to enjoy candy tonight.
According to Fox News, a city in New Jersey has a law that prohibits anyone 14 and older from trick or treating.
In 2017, a local newspaper reminded readers that trick-or-treating is really for the kids — not the adults — in Pennsauken Township.
“Treatment is for children, not adults. It is illegal for anyone over the age of 14 to go out unless you are acting as a chaperone,” All Around Pennsauken posted at the time, adding that adults “may not ask for candy or candy.”
“They have to wait until they get home to help their kids ‘sort’ the candy.”
A spokesman for Pennsauken Township confirmed the law to Fox News, though it is rarely enforced. The rule, which has actually “never needed to be used” until now, “is only on the books to be used in a case where teenagers are causing more trick-or-treating than they are treating.”
“It is the council’s position that trick-or-treating should be inclusive and that any child who wants to get out of the house for the right reasons, regardless of their age, should be able to enjoy the holidays safely,” the representative explained.
Similarly, in New Jersey’s Upper Deerfield Township, children age out of door-to-door parties at age 12.
Other cities around the country have also passed laws to regulate scammers – some with fines.
Some cities in Virginia prohibit children older than 12 from collecting candy on Halloween. In some of those countries, anyone found to be involved in fraudulent activity who is older than the age limit is guilty of a Class 4 misdemeanor, according to Fox News. In Portsmouth, Virginia, tricking or treating someone over the age of 12 is a Class 3 misdemeanor.
Citing state code, the media reported that Class 4 misdemeanors are punishable by a fine of up to $250 in the state, and someone convicted of a Class 3 misdemeanor can be fined up to $500.
In Delmar, Delaware, not only is there an age limit of 12, but the city has also implemented a curfew. According to Fox News, the municipality only allows one trick-or-treat night on October 31 between 6:00 and 8:00 p.m.
It has also banned Mischief Nights – a long-standing teenage Halloween tradition that involves a night of trick-or-treating and debauchery around town – despite usually involving harmless pranks.
In Charleston, South Carolina, no one older than 16 can wear masks in public — even on Halloween — reports Fox News. Even if they attend a costume party, the city insists that revelers must wait until their destination to wear masks. The city also enforces a hard curfew on trick-or-treating at 10pm on the spooktacular holiday.
