I want to name my daughter after a teenage movie villain

Naming your child is no longer child’s play.

As the world prepares to welcome Gen Beta in 2025, the competition to give newborns names that set them apart — or even put them on the path to becoming billionaires — is hotter than ever, driving some parents into a frenzy hire expensive consultants to make sure they get it right.

And if there’s one trend emerging for next year, according to experts, it’s nostalgia for names that haven’t been known since before most new moms and dads were born.

Move over, Madison – make way for Elsie, Birdie, Goldie, Regina. But there’s a potential problem with the latter, one expectant mother reminded everyone on Reddit recently — and that problem is Regina George.

The antagonist of the 2004 teen comedy Mean Girls, George (Rachel McAdams) made such an impression on a viewer, she’s nervous that her daughter might spend her childhood being teased for sharing a moniker with the fictional character Twenty year old.

“I’m having my third daughter in a few months and we’ve chosen the name Regina,” the mom-to-be mused on the Namenerds subreddit.

“I’m curious if you all associate the name primarily with Mean Girls or if there are other associations for you. Is this on par with naming a girl Elsa? We don’t think so, but I think inquiring minds.”

Regina George, famous for lines like “Make a loser, we’re going shopping” and “So you agree? You think you’re really pretty,” sat at the head of the Plastics clique at North Shore High School, made up of by George, Gretchen “Fetch” Wieners and Karen Smith.

The ecosystem of the fictional high school in the suburbs of Chicago was noticeably removed by the arrival of Cady Heron (Lindsay Lohan), leading to the eventual arrival of George.

A popular Redditor revealed that the original poster’s fears weren’t entirely unfounded.

“I’m Regina! “Mean Girls came out when I was in 4th grade,” the woman said.

“Regina George hoes happen quite often, but I’ve learned to rely on them a lot – it makes it easier to pronounce my name and people don’t misspell it,” she shrugged.

“Either it’s going to be a reference to bad girls or it’s going to be called Vagina,” warned another commenter – possibly a Canadian.

North of the 49th parallel, the name is usually associated with the capital of Saskatchewan, called Regina, but pronounced as the popular part of the female anatomy.

The corn-fed metropolis recently made headlines for trying to have fun with the cheat-prone pronunciation, adopting “Show Us Your Regina” as a new tourism slogan.

Officials were forced to cancel the sexist campaign and issue a scathing apology after serious local protests.

On Reddit, many people thought the mother was getting too worried, suggesting that by the time her daughter went to school, the reference would be almost ancient – while others wondered if it wasn’t already one for the history books, even following a Broadway musical and a 2024 film adaptation of the popular stage play.

“My daughter’s name is Regina. There were no references to bad girls or vaginas. When it inevitably happens, I won’t care. People can and will find something stupid and negative to say about any name,” said one mother.

Whatever – we’re getting cheese fries.
